4 Tips For Skin Protection In Cold Weather

Updated: Jan 4, 2023

When the cooler weather of autumn arrives, it is important to take proactive steps in order to protect your skin from moisture loss. The low humidity and cold temperatures can be detrimental to skin health, so it is essential to keep hydrated and ensure that you are providing your skin with the proper nourishment.

During the colder winter months, taking special care of your skin is essential to maintain its health and appearance. Not only will healthy skin protect you from bacteria and viruses, but it also provides protection against the sun’s ultraviolet rays which can cause long-term damage to your cells. It is important for individuals who suffer from Eczema flare-ups during this time of year to take extra measures when caring for their skin as these conditions can be exacerbated by cold weather. Here are four tips that I have found useful in protecting my family's and my own skin:

1.       Moisturize daily – I recommend using a cream-based moisturizer such as Eucerin which works well if you suffer from Eczema or a natural/raw Shea Butter. I would also recommend staying away from products with fragrances or lanolin if you have sensitive skin. Apply on wet skin to trap surface moisture.

2.       Humidify – Add moisture back into the air in small spaces/rooms by using a humidifier. Be sure to clean the unit and change the water after usage to reduce mold and fungi.

3.       Vitamin D supplements – We naturally produce vitamin D during daily sun exposure, but this exposure decreases during colder seasons. You can find vitamin supplements at your local supermarket @Walmart or your local pharmacy such as @Walgreens.

4.       Reduce hot water usage – Nothing like a hot shower or bath but be mindful of how your skin responds during the colder months. Take shorter showers or baths with lukewarm temperatures to minimize the reduction or moisture of the skin and irritation. Immediately moisturize and pat the skin dry.

By following these simple steps you can ensure that your skin stays protected throughout the cold winter months!🤎
